Kenya

  • Language: English spoken in most places, smaller towns/villages a mix of English and Swahili;
  • Mobile internet: $24 = 40GB. Extensive network 50-200mbps in most towns and cities on your phone. It's all on redundant power so internet stays on during power cuts;

  • Safety: Generally good, take caution in cities, at night generally take taxis/tuktuks/motorbike taxis (bodas);
  • Cost: Western style restaurants and hotels especially in Nairobi are reasonably pricey, local restaurants can offer great value;

Where to stay

  • Diani: Good place to start amazing beaches, has a proper coliving, lots of coffee shops, safe and set-up for tourists, meet a crowd to share appts with in other places (Full Diani guide)
  • Nairobi: Big city, lots of culture, good coworking options but not lots of short-term (Full Nairobi guide);
  • Watamu: Proper oasis of nothing if you need a retreat, still has a great coffee shop;

Where to visit

  • Lamu: Quite expensive but beautiful, great for a week/weekend;
  • Naivasha: Very pretty, easy to get to from Nairobi;
